Program Description
BW/NC has been offering University of North Carolina System students study abroad opportunities since 1996 and the program for UNC system students is based at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's campus.

Hohenheim Castle is the focal point of the university campus. In a unique campus environment around the 200 year old Castle, 5.500 students are currently enrolled in the research intensive and internationally focused university. Some facilities are also available to the general public, e.g. botanical and exotic gardens and three museums. Liberal art activities play an important role in campus life.

The origins of the University date back to the year 1818. A remarkably high quota of foreign students throughout the 19th century established the early international reputation of Hohenheim. In 1967 the former "Agricultural College" was designated "University of Hohenheim" (cf. constitution). Out of the tradition of natural, agricultural and economic sciences a modern combination of subjects evolved.

ISO (International Students Organization) provides a Buddy for each exchange student. A Buddy is a Hohenheim student who will meet you at the airport or train station, help you with administrative issues and other questions of daily life. The University of Hohenheim provides a great overview for incoming exchange students: from information about the region to health insurance.

Coursework

If you are majoring in biology, agricultural sciences, animal science, economics, business administration, nutritional sciences or communications, the University of Hohenheim would be an excellent location for you. Aside from the numerous leisure activities which may be enjoyed in the city area and its proximity to the Alsace region and Switzerland, the outstanding biological and agricultural science programs which attract many students to the university. Most of the courses at University of Hohenheim are taught in German. A four semester proficiency should be demonstrated in order to take full advantage of the courses. A limited number of courses may be available in English.

Courses at the Hohenheim of Hohenheim are usually offered as lectures, tutorials or seminars. In most study programs, the courses are held for the entire duration of the lecture period - normally once a week. Every semester, a course catalog (or Vorlesungsverzeichnis) is published which lists all courses that are offered, the time and place, as well as the name of the lecturer. Course catalogs are usually published just before the semester begins. For the most part, the course catalog should be available in English. The International Office provides you with more information about how to select your courses.

An intensive language course for exchange students is offered at the beginning of the semester. The course is supplemented by seminars on regional, cultural and economic topics, as well as short trips. Additionally, participants can deepen their knowledge independently or with guidance in the Language Center’s modern-equipped media library (course costs are additional).

It is also possible to learn German with the help of a Language Tandem. Language Tandem is when two or more people regularly meet each other in order to improve their language skills by teaching and learning a foreign language at the same time.
