Program Description
Located in Tokyo, Chuo University is one of the largest and most prestigious private universities in Japan, boasting 129 years of history.  Chuo University Exchange Programs offer an opportunity to take courses or conduct research for one semester or one year at Chuo, which can include comprehensive Japanese language study as an integral part of your degree program at your home institution.  

Chuo Exchange Programs give students an exciting opportunity to study at one of Japan's leading universities and experience the best of Japan through academic studies and cultural immersion.  Upon completion of the Exchange Program, exchange students can transfer credits and/or academic achievements gained at Chuo to UNC Asheville.  A semester or a year at Chuo will undoubtedly enhance your degree work and your life.

Coursework

The Exchange Program consists of three components: educational program, intercultural program, and orientation program.  In the educational program, comprehensive Japanese language courses designed specifically for exchange students are offered.  In parallel with the Japanese language courses, exchange students can take regular academic courses taught in English or Japanese, with other international students and Japanese students.  In the intercultural program, exchange students will participate in various intercultural programs and activities on and off campus.  The orientation program is designed to effectively facilitate exchange students' adjustment process to Japanese culture as well as readjustment process to their home cultures.

Courses offered at Chuo include disciplines such as Business, Economics, Cultural and Social Studies, Environmental Studies, History, Philosophy, Religion, International Relations and Politics, Literature, Psychology, Science, Math and Languages.

Housing & Meals

Exchange students at Chuo University are guaranteed a university accommodation (single occupancy). The Tamadaira International Residence offers 62 private rooms (furnished 2 or 3 bedroom shared suites), a communal kitchen, and lounge spaces. In addition, the Seiseki Sakuragaoka International Residence offers 94 private apartments containing a kitchen and bathroom. Both residences have a resident manager, are designed for students to cook for themselves, and provide an environment that enables students to support each other and broaden their international perspectives. There is also a cafeteria Various events are organized at the residences, including welcome parties, BBQ parties, sports days, seasonal events, and farewell parties. For students choosing to live on their own, Chuo provides a referral service for a wide range of relatively inexpensive accommodation.

On the Tama campus there are dining facilities on every floor of the Hilltop '78 building. The cafeteria building offers a diverse selection of foods, such as Japanese and Western foods, noodles, fast food, coffee, and tea. There is also the Basu-Tei restaurant which serves mainly Chinese food, and the Leaf Cafe in the C Square Building serves light meals and beverages. The Co-op operates canteens at the Korakuen campus as well.

Finances

You will pay your tuition and fees to UNC Asheville and accommodations to the Chuo University. Meals are paid separately.

Scholarships

The UNC Asheville Study Abroad Office awards need-based scholarships on a competitive basis to participants on UNCA exchange programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500 and are scaled in proportion to program budget and demonstrated financial need.
