Program Description
BW/NC has been offering University of North Carolina System students study abroad opportunities since 1996 and the program for UNC system students is based at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's campus.

In general, Germany is not known for being the world’s sunniest country, however the region surrounding Karlsruhe is the exception to the rule. With 1800 sun hours per year Karlsruhe is above the national average. The winters are mild and summers offer the perfect weather to enjoy a day out swimming. Karlsruhe enjoys vast and diverse leisure, culture and sports options, which offer something for everyone. Facets of cultural offerings are well-known theaters and museums, as well as “Das Fest” one of the largest annual German open-air-festivals.

KIT welcomes international students on its campus. Internationalization is an integral part of KIT culture. 20% of students at KIT have come from abroad to study in Germany. In addition, there are about 500 international scientists who have chosen KIT as their research facility. KIT, its associates and its students are open to the international environment and are internationally mobile. Click here to learn more about the Karlsruhe International Office's website.

Over the years, KIT developed dedicated support for international students to make their start and stay in Karlsruhe as easy and enjoyable as possible. Orientation Week, joint events and trips during the semester, as well as alumni support: international students are in good hands. Just turn to the Karlsruhe International Students Office for a personal consultation.

KIT, in addition to the many other sports clubs, provides a wide range of sports activities. Please ask the Karlsruhe International Office for support. Moreover, the “Badische Meile” (Baden’s mile) and the Baden-Marathon  are held once a year in Karlsruhe.

Coursework

KIT offers over 80 study courses that will prepare you well for your career. At KIT, you can study engineering, economics, natural sciences, information technology, humanities and social sciences. For further information in German, go to the student page of KIT.

Students have the choice between taking courses in German or English. For German study, four-semester proficiency must be demonstrated. Click here for a full listing of possible English-language courses at KIT ('courses' mean degrees in this context). It may be somewhat difficult to find relevant coursework since the information about the classes/lecturers are provided in German. Keep in mind the degree level of the courses (BS/BA versus MS/MA) as well as the language of instruction.

Housing & Meals

Students will have the option of living in Student Union Residences, student residence from other agencies or non-university private shared apartments. You can find some information here.

However, it is not too easy to find accommodation in Karlsruhe, which means that you should take care of this at an early stage. There is a shortage of housing especially at the beginning of the winter semester. Most of the students in Karlsruhe live either in one of the many student residences or share a flat with somebody.

More information on the services and options offered in Karlsruhe can be found here.

Finances

You will pay your tuition and fees to UNC Asheville and accommodations and meals (if included) to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Refer to UNCG's website for more information on costs.

Scholarships

The UNC Asheville Study Abroad Office awards need-based scholarships on a competitive basis to participants on UNCA exchange programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500 and are scaled in proportion to program budget and demonstrated financial need.

The Study Abroad Office advises students to research and pursue a wide range of available funding opportunities. To find scholarships applicable to your program, browse the Cost and Financial Aid page of Study Abroad website.
