Program Description
BW/NC has been offering University of North Carolina System students study abroad opportunities since 1996 and the program for UNC system students is based at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's campus.
Studying at the University of Konstanz means living and learning on a university campus situated geographically in a most unique location. The university lies directly on Lake Constance at the intersection of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany. Over 10,000 Students originating from 92 countries are enrolled here. With over 130 European partner universities and many other international exchange programs worldwide, the University is part of an expansive global network of learning opportunities.
Throughout the semester excursions will be planned by the University of Konstanz's International Office. Unfortunately, the information is in German but you could ask your buddy to help you out if you decided to participate in the buddy program. This program connects new international students to local students who are studying at the University of Konstanz. These buddies serve as first point of contacts on arrival and throughout the semester.
The orientation program in October/April for all international students provides information meetings and assessment tests for German language courses during the semester lecture periods. Excursions (organized by students for students) and field excursions (area studies of the Lake Constance Region) are offered by the University of Konstanz's International Office.

Coursework
There are over 100 study programs at the University of Konstanz and they fall into the following categories:
- Mathematics and Natural Sciences
- Politics, Law, and Economics
- Humanities
Exchange students should be fluent in either
German or English in order to successfully complete a full course load during their exchange studies at the University of Konstanz. The best way of getting information on lectures and courses is by visiting the
homepage of the University of Konstanz. The most important information can be found in English on the
website of the International Office.
Although the language of instruction at the University of Konstanz is German, there are many departments which offer a great variety of courses in English. Exchange students with elementary German language skills can combine Intensive German language courses taught at the University of Konstanz Language Institute with courses taught in English at the respective departments.
The International Office created a guideline for the course search which you can access
here (under Course Selection). Courses are called 'Verantstaltungen' in German.
Students can learn a foreign language with the
Tandem Language Learning Program (service of the Language Institute). Two students, each with a different mother tongue, get together to learn each other's language, working alternately in one of the two languages. Moreover, students can participate in a four-week-Intensive
German Language Course in September or March (before the semester starts). German classes are also available during the semester.
Housing & Meals
Students studying at the University of Konstanz will have the
option of living in student housing or in a private apartment. For students there is a limited number of rooms available in the
student residence. The rooms are usually in single or double occupancy apartments as well as in shared flats (WGs = Wohngemeinschaft).
The search for a room or apartment in Konstanz, as in most university cities, can often be a daunting, time-consuming process. This said, Konstanz is among the German university cities with the most student housing and the amount of available private housing has also increased. Nevertheless, there is not enough inexpensive housing to meet needs. In order to find a room or apartment at a reasonable price, one must start the search as early as possible. The International Office offers assistance and advice on securing your student residence or finding private accommodation.
