Program Description
BW/NC has been offering University of North Carolina System students study abroad opportunities since 1996 and the program for UNC system students is based at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's campus.

Every semester the University of Stuttgart welcomes exchange students from all over the world, who can profit from a wide range of study programs in engineering, humanities, social science and economics. When you start your studies at the University of Stuttgart in a foreign country, a new language, and a different study system many questions arise like: "What formalities do I have to complete? Where can I go shopping? How do I organize my studies?"

The University of Stuttgart, in cooperation with the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart, offers a Welcoming Service for foreign students that provides the help you need to deal with these initial difficulties. Participation in the Welcoming Service is free of charge.

The Office of International Affairs has also created a Welcome Guide that offers a lot of practical information. Their website is also a good place to start gathering information about the university and the city of Stuttgart.

Coursework

The Office of International Affairs provides students with information about courses offered in English. The course catalog LSF provides an overview of all courses taught during the semester. Unfortunately, the catalog is in German but the International Office created an English manual to navigate through the LSF. In case you have any questions, please contact the Office of International Affairs.

The university offers an intensive German language course that is specifically designed for the needs of visiting program students, students in the international Master's programs and Double-Master's Program. Overseas students are expected to have some proficiency in German corresponding to at least 400 hours or one year of university coursework in German. There is an additional course fee. For more information click here.

In addition, the language center offers German language courses throughout the semester and students are able to participate in a Cross-Cultural Mentoring Program.

Housing & Meals

The Office of International Affairs advises incoming exchange students to apply for accommodation in the mixed dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart. Most of the dormitories are located on the campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. All dormitories can be easily reached within 20 min. from the city centre campus by S-Bahn (commuter train). The single bedrooms are equipped with a table, bed, chair, wardrobe/closet, bookshelf and a washbasin. There is a common kitchen for all the members of an apartment or of a floor. You must bring your own dishes with you or buy them in Germany. Bed linen and coverlets can be purchased in the janitor's office for an additional cost. Please note that the Office of International Affairs does not have any influence on the allocation of dormitories.

German students usually rent private apartments and share them with other students (so called Wohngemeinschaften, or WGs). Each WG tenant has his/her own room. Kitchen, bath room/shower/toilet are shared with the other flatmates. Rooms in shared apartments (WGs) are attractive because they may be cheaper and offer more opportunities to meet other people. However, it is also more difficult to find private accommodation through websites like www.wg-gesucht.de  www.studenten-wg.de and www.wg-welt.de

Finances

You will pay your tuition and fees to UNC Asheville and accommodations and meals (if included) to the University of Stuttgart. Refer to UNCG's website for more information on costs.

Scholarships

The UNC Asheville Study Abroad Office awards need-based scholarships on a competitive basis to participants on UNCA exchange programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500 and are scaled in proportion to program budget and demonstrated financial need.
