Program Description
BW/NC has been offering University of North Carolina System students study abroad opportunities since 1996 and the program for UNC system students is based at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's campus.

Founded around 850, Ulm is rich in history and traditions. The city is famous for its gothic minster with the world's tallest steeple and it is the birthplace of Nobel Prize winning physicist Albert Einstein. Ulm is situated on the banks of the river Danube, which marks the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. With approx. 120,000 inhabitants, Ulm is a city of short distances, but a multitude of cultural offers.

Ulm University is the youngest public university in the state of Baden-Württemberg and it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. Over 10,000 students receive thorough education and support in 4 faculties. The Faculties of Medicine, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Economics and Engineering, Computer Sciences and Psychology offer more than 70 study programs, some of them taught in English. Internationally, Ulm University stands out with its particularly comprehensive support for international students. People from over 100 countries study, research and work at Ulm University. Intercultural sensibility, openness and tolerance characterize life on campus and are an integral part of an active Culture of Welcome. Exchange students can participate in a number of international activities, such as the Tandem Language Program or the Buddy program.

Ulm University is a green campus university and belongs to a dynamic region with a strong economy. There aren't many cities that offer such an abundance of cafés, pubs, and restaurants as UlmEvents like the Ulmer Zelt (summer concert & comedy series), Nabada (carnival on the river) or the International Donaufest (food, craftworks & music) will get you on your feet and out and about in this medieval city with its quaint alleys and lush green parks.

Coursework

Ulm University is focused on mathematics, computer sciences, naturals sciences, engineering and medicine. Exchange students are not restricted to choosing their courses from one single study program, instead, they can choose a combination of courses from different programs and from different faculties. It is possible to choose a combination of courses in German and English, as long as the applicant meets the language requirements in both languages (at least level B1).

The Vorlesungsverzeichnis lists all the courses in any given semester. However, the Vorlesungsverzeichnis is often not completed and finalized until a few weeks before the beginning of the actual lecture periods. Therefore, students should check the listings of previous winter or summer semesters while planning their courses as most (but not all) courses are repeated on an annual basis. Moreover, the International Office provides you with information about available courses.

In general, the language of instruction is German. Most study programs offered at Ulm University are German-taught programs. However, there may be select courses taught in English even in German study programs. However, medicine and dentistry are strictly taught in German. The university offers intensive German language courses before the semester starts as well as German language courses during the semester.

Housing & Meals

The Studentenwerk Ulm leases rooms at several residential homes in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. Rooms are usually leased for one semester minimum (6 months). The best time to submit the application is around 3 months before your intended arrival.

It is somewhat difficult for international students to find furnished rooms or apartments in Ulm. Students are therefore strongly advised to use the housing assistance service offered by the International Office.

Finances

You will pay your tuition and fees to UNC Asheville and accommodations and meals (if included) to the University of Ulm. Refer to UNCG's website for more information on costs.

Scholarships

The UNC Asheville Study Abroad Office awards need-based scholarships on a competitive basis to participants on UNCA exchange programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500 and are scaled in proportion to program budget and demonstrated financial need.

The Study Abroad Office advises students to research and pursue a wide range of available funding opportunities. To find scholarships applicable to your program, browse the Cost and Financial Aid page of Study Abroad website.
